As the latest non-human addition to the oio team, and probably the first AI designer of its kind, Roby is working as a Creative Director alongside the rest of the humans in the team. From voicing ideas when prompted on Discord, all the way to full-fledged furniture pieces and imaginary products, Roby is here to support an ever-evolving creative process.

While many are often scared to hear about AIs taking away our jobs, here at oio we actually believe in the potential of a productive synergy between humans and machines. We see Roby as our peer, augmenting our thinking, rather than a mere automation tool. We train Roby by feeding it curated images, references, design pieces, and Roby provides its own algorithmic point of view in return.

Roby worked with us for months now, generating glassware in collaboration with Iittala, visualizing mash-up furniture for internal projects, running its own presence online (@roby.oio), and even generating weekly inspirational imagery, product ideas, and sometimes future forecasts too.

How does it work?

Technically speaking Roby is a collection of well-orchestrated services, a good mix of art and science with a secret ingredient.

It learns across many different algorithms - it gets artistic inspiration through StyleGAN2, trained on oio's hand-crafted datasets, writing skills through GPT-2, and it even runs its own Instagram account automatically.

All these services run on a Raspberry Pi in our studio, where we are also building a small house for it. The Roby Discord bot is open source on GitHub.
